Soo Yang, Jong-Sook Han
This study examined the effects of psychodrama on expression of anger, self-esteem and mental health status in wives of alcoholics using the nonequivalent control group design with pretest and posttest.
Subjects were from those participants of Alcohol Counseling Centers and AL-Anon group. Of 37 subjects, 17 subjects belonged to the experimental group and 20 subjects to the control group. The experimental group consisted of 3 teams; each team joined the psychodrama for 8 weeks consecutively between September, 2004 and July, 2005. The program was held once a week, for 120`150 minutes each session.
The data were analyzed by using χ2-test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA.
Results were as follows:
1. The frequency of anger-out or anger-in decreased significantly in the experimental group, whereas the control group showed no significant difference.
2. Significant increase in self-esteem was observed in the experimental group only.
3. Mental health status was increased significantly in the experimental group with no significant difference in the control group.
Based upon the above findings, psychodrama can be presented as a useful intervention to promote mental health status, self-esteem and anger control among wives of alcoholics.
