Effect of Stretching, Muscle Strengthening, and Walking Exercise on Cardiopulmonary Function in Hemodialysis Patients

Effect of Stretching, Muscle Strengthening, and Walking Exercise on Cardiopulmonary Function in Hemodialysis Patients Purpose : In the maintenance hemodialysis patients, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and their physical inactivity and low quality of life often results from weak musculoskeletal strength. Although exercise program has been reported to improve cardiopulmonary function and quality of life in hemodialysis patients, the adequate type and method of exercise have not been determined. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of stretching, muscle strengthening and walking exercise on the cardiopulmonary function in hemodialysis patients. Method : The study included 42 patients (control group 21, experimental group 21) on maintenance hemodialysis at 4 university hospitals between October, 2003 and January, 2004. There was no difference in age, sex, hemoglobin level and duration of hemodialysis between control and experimental groups. Experimental group performed stretching, muscle strengthening and walking exercise 20-60 minutes per session, 3 times a week for 12 weeks. The effect of exercise was assessed by cardiopulmonary function (peak oxygen uptake, peak ventilation, peak respiration rate, maximal heart rate, and exercise duration) using cycle ergometer. Result: Cardiopulmonary function was not changed in the control group. On the other hand, cardiopulmonary function, such as peak oxygen uptake, peak ventilation, peak respiration rate, and exercise duration were significantly improved in the experimental group after 12 week's exercise. However, maximal heart rate was not changed after exercise. Conclusion: We conclude that stretching, muscle strengthening, and walking exercise improve cardiopulmonary function in hemodialysis patients.
