Introduction Smoking is one of detrimental public health issues and charges high health care costs in contemporary society. Various health promotion programs against anti-smoking were initiated in public health sectors in Korea since 1995. The purpose of this study was to identify effects of smoking cessation program on smoking rate and nicotine dependency among adult smokers at a rural community. Methods  The study design was quasi-experimental with pretest and posttest. The subjects were 55 current smokers at a rural community in Honam province. The program was consisted of 5 sessions and implemented for 120 minutes in each session in collaboration with public health nurses, aides and community health practitioners. Data were collected from 20 February to 10 March, 2005, and analyzed by percentage and paired t-test using SPSS-PC 12.0 program. Results After implementing the program, 45 subjects quitted smoking. Also the mean scores of nicotine dependence was significantly decreased (t = 11.99, p = .001) from 4.96 in pretest to 0.82 in posttest and urine cotinine was also decreased (t = 5.95, p = .001) from 2.62 to 0.75. On the other hand, the mean scores of smoking-related knowledge was not changed significantly. Conclusions The smoking cessation program was effective to quit smoking among rural adult smokers and to decrease nicotine dependence and urine cotinine.
