Criminal Background Checks: A Descriptive Analysis of Schools and Practice Facilities

This study describes the criminal background checks used in Schools of Nursing and health care facilities in the United States. The types of criminal background checks are discussed as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

Using a random survey of a geographic representation (East, Northeast, Central, South, West and Northwest) of baccalaureate and higher degree programs and their respective websites, 60 schools were included in the analysis. Additionally, using the same geographic distribution, 60 hospital websites were surveyed as well. The data illustrates that there are geographic differences as well as major differences in the type of check utilized. Some schools do not require background checks at all whereas others require the most detailed type. Data on the cost of the background check and who is responsible for its payment are also presented. Lastly, the presentation addresses both the ethics and legal concerns of criminal background checks and whether they are inherently discriminatory and a violation of privacy.
