Promoting Evidence-Friendly Clinical Environments: Strategies for Nursing Leadership
Cathy J. Thompson, PhD, RN, University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, School of Nursing, Denver, CO, USA
Learning Objective #1: Describe characteristics of an evidence-friendly clinical nursing environment.
Learning Objective #2: Consider leadership and management strategies used to promote evidence-based practice.

Promoting evidence in practice starts with molding mindsets in the academic setting and continues with promoting evidence-based practice in institutional settings. Research on barriers to EBP points to the importance of institutional leaders and managers in supporting EBP in tangible ways. An organizational culture of clinical inquiry is critical to encourage and implement evidence-based practices. Nurses need to have inquiring minds! Clinical inquiry should be encouraged so that tradition- and authority-based interventions are weeded out of nursing practice. Multi-faceted strategies have been shown to be effective in promoting EBP in clinical practice. This session will review characteristics of evidence-friendly clinical environments. Strategies to further evidence-based practice in institutional settings will be presented.
