Empowerment and Job Satisfaction of Nurses in Teaching Hospital

Purpose:  

The purpose of the study was to test the relevance of Kanter’s propositions as follows: 1. the relationship between nurses access to opportunity and power in one’s position and perceptions of job satisfactionG2. the relationship between perceptions of workplace empowerment and job satisfaction of nurses in a teaching hospital in Taiwan.

Method:

A random sample was drawn from the list of 1,616 Registered Nurses with one-year experience at a teaching hospital in July 2004.  A total of 527 self-administrated questionnaires were sending with a response rate of 86% (453).  Four hundred responses were found to be valid.  Three self-report questionnaires were used in this study: The demographic data, the Condition of Work Effectiveness Questionnaire was used to measure of staff nurses access to opportunity and power and nurses' perceptions of workplace empowerment. The Job Satisfaction Questionnaire measures nurse’s job satisfaction.

Results:

The results showed: 1. A strong positive relationship between nurses access to opportunity and information, resources and support power in one’s position and perceptions of job satisfaction, 2. A strong positive relationship between workplace empowerment and job satisfaction.  Thus, Kanter's proposition that employees who work in an environment, higher level of empowerment were associated with greater work satisfaction.

Conclusion:

The findings have important implications for nurse administrators.
