Learning Objective #1: describe the research methods used to evaluate existing practice context and culture and identify key detriments that impact on continence management.
Learning Objective #2: to follow the development and testing of a research instrument to measure practice context.

In care settings for older people, the promotion and improved management of continence is a key theme in developing practice. Despite major advancements in the evidence base underpinning continence promotion and management of continence (DoH 2001b), there continues to be little emphasis placed on detailed and individualised assessment or programmes of treatment.  Literature suggests that in the utilisation of research in practice ‘context’ as a key issue McCormack et al (2002).

A two- year all-Ireland collaborative research project, (funded by the Northern Ireland DHSSPS R&D Office and the Republic of Ireland Health Research Board), between the University of Ulster, Belfast and  University College Cork is now completed.
