Learning Objective #1: Describe the educational need of clinical nurses in Japan.
Learning Objective #2: Explain that continuing education programs related to research should be provided for clinical nurses in Japan.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the educational need of clinical nurses in Japan. METHODS: Nineteen hundreds and forty one clinical nurses randomly sampled in Japan were asked to answer the following two instruments. The Educational Need Assessment Tool for Clinical Nurses (CENAT) (Miura, 2005) was used to measure the educational need of clinical nurses. The items of the CENAT describe the desirability of clinical nurse as identified by a qualitative study (Matsuda, 2003), and participants rated the degree of achievement for them. It had 35 items, 4-point Likert-type scale, then the possible score range was from 35 to 140. The items were grouped into 7 subscales, each had 5 items, then the possible score range was from 4 to 20. The scale had well-established internal consistency, and construct validity was established by factor analysis. The Questionnaire for Nurses' Attributes (QNA) was used to collect the demographic data of clinical nurse. Content validity was established by a pilot study and an expert panel. The data were analyzed statistically. FINDINGS: The mean score of the CENAT was 83.4 (SD=13.8), and that of each subscale was as follows; (1) show full-grown sociality (mean=10.5, SD=2.4), (2) behave autonomously based on one's belief (mean=12.2, SD=2.5), (3) play various roles as a nurse and a member of society (mean=10.9, SD=2.8), (4) evaluate the essence of the problem and creative idea to achieve the goal (mean=12.3, SD=2.5), (5) use professional knowledge and techniques to cope with any situation (mean=10.9, SD=2.5), (6) strive to keep up the quality of nursing function (mean=12.6, SD=2.9), (7) learn and research to develop oneself (mean=14.2, SD=2.9). IMPLICATIONS: The results suggested that Japanese clinical nurses have to improvement of learn and research to develop oneself. The educational system is developed to reinforce autonomous learning of Japanese nurse.
