Factors Affecting Information Systems Use and Its Perceived Outcomes Among Ohio Registered Nurses

Although there is growing consensus that information technology in health care is reshaping nurse' work environment, and improving quality of care and patient safety, nurses may reject using information systems (IS). Nurses are critical users of information technology and their use of IS improves timeliness and access to information, reduces repetitive tasks and redirects nurse's attention to the bedside. Yet there is a little information about the factors that facilitate IS use, nurses’ satisfaction and their perspective of IS benefits. The purposes of this study are to explore the relationships among inputs related to individual characteristics (age, nursing education, and computer experience), and organizational factors (user involvement in implementation and management support) and the process of nurses' IS use; and the relationships between IS use and IS outcomes (IS benefits and satisfaction). This study will be guided by Donabedian’s and Holzemer & Reilly’s conceptual framework. The study will use a descriptive correlational cross-sectional design, with a survey methodology. A random sample of staff nurses who work in hospitals and are members of Ohio Nurses Association will be mailed with the study questionnaires and a cover letter. Nurses have to spend at least 50% of their time providing direct patient care and use at least one IS to be included in the study. Data analysis will include: descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study will help to evaluate factors affecting IS use, and it will help to identify potential barriers to or factors that can enable the realization of the benefits of IS use and satisfaction as outcomes in heath care.
