The strategic vision of an organization represents a compass directing the ongoing mission and orientation of that organization. Transforming a specific strategic initiative into a measurable outcome, however, can be a challenge in a large, volunteer specialty organization where goals are numerous, but resources are limited. A call to advance the art and science of perianesthesia nursing through evidence-based practice was issued by the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses in March of 2004. This paper provides an overview of the organization's strategic call for the advancement of the specialty through the application of EBP. Strategies used in transforming this strategic vision into an organization-wide process of evidence-based clinical practice guideline development and dissemination are also detailed. An overview of the ASPAN EBP model is presented and operationalization of this model into a working procedure is described. Challenges and successes encountered in this process will also be presented and summary recommendations provided.
