Special Session: Towards a Healthy Work Environment: Renovating the Workplace Using the Tools of Best Practice Guidelines |
Learning Objective #1: Gain understanding of the development, evaluation, and dissemination of healthy work environment best practice guidelines (HWE BPGs), based on the RNAO HWE BPG Program experience. |
Learning Objective #2: Describe how healthy work environment best practice guidelines can be used to create and sustain healthy workplaces. |
It is clear that major renovations are necessary in health care work places across all sectors in order to achieve the goal of a healthy work environment for nurses and other health care professionals and staff. A number of health care challenges related to patient safety, quality care, retention of qualified staff and recruitment of nurses into the profession are directly or indirectly linked to the quality of the work environment. The Registered Nurses of Ontario (RNAO) recognizing this link between healthy work environments and patient, nurse and health system outcomes, embarked on the healthy work environment best practice guidelines (HWE BPG) programme, with funding support from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. This presentation will outline the RNAO HWE BPG program components and the HWE BPG guideline development methodology. The six HWE BPGs that have been developed, since the programme commenced in 2003 will be highlighted and include Developing and Sustaining Nursing Leadership, Collaborative Practice Among Nursing Teams, Embracing Cultural Diversity in Health Care, Professionalism of the Nurse, Developing and Sustaining Effective Staffing and Workload Practices, and Workplace Health, Safety and Well-being of the Nurse. In addition, an overview of the evaluation phase including pilot testing of guideline implementation across sectors will be presented. The session will conclude with the current and planned dissemination and knowledge uptake strategies and a preview of the next cycle of guidelines to be developed. |
