The effect of case management on cancer patients' physical and psychological status

Patients with cancer may suffer from physical and psychological impact during the period of medical treatments, and those tortures will affect patients’ compliances to receive the following treatment. The aims of this study are to investigate the effects of case management interventions on cancer patients’ physical and psychological status as well as the continual treatment during medical treatments.
This longitudinal study will be conducted. Subjects who receive operations, chemotherapies or radiotherapies will be transferred from the Cancer Care Association where established by a medical group in northern Taiwan. The community-based case management interventions which include providing patient education information, initiative care, self-help groups, and recovery materials will be conducted. Several structured questionnaires will used to assess the patients’ performance, the patients’ physical and psychological status monthly after applying the Case management interventions. Data will be analyzed by using SPSS 11.0 software for descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA. The expecting outcomes will reach as the following:
1. to describe the cancer patients’ physical and psychological status as receiving different medical treatment.
2. to explore the effect of case management interventions on cancer patients’ physical and psychological status.
3. to describe the cancer patients’ compliance of continual treatment during the period of case management interventions.
4. to find the relationship between cancer patients’ physical and psychological status and their compliance of continual treatment.
The findings of this study will provide the health providers to understand regarding to cancer patients’ physical and psychological status and its related factors during medical treatments. In addition, the results of this study will broaden future perspective of cancer care, expanding the realm of oncology nursing from the clinical settings to community, and providing a reference resource for future nursing research and education.
