Learning Objective #1: incorporate a course on evidence based practice into an undergraduate nuring program
Learning Objective #2: help students to apply evidence through the use of models, tools, and evidence-based practice guidelines and databases

This presentation addresses a new undergraduate (BScN) course which provides an overview of the current debate surrounding evidence-based practice in nursing. An historical overview of the influences that shaped the development of this major healthcare focus is provided. Analysis of the current state-of-the-discipline related to the identification and use of evidence in nursing and an exploration of future possibilities will be undertaken. Students explore and evaluate strategies intended to both critique and facilitate the use of evidence relating to practice within the context of different nursing theories. Examination of the role of nursing knowledge, ways of knowing, and patient preference in defining evidenced-based practice is undertaken. Course learning objectives include, that students will be able to:
1.      Describe historical influences on the development of current trends in evidence-based practice
2.      Critically appraise evidence in nursing through the lens of selected philosophical and theoretical perspectives
3.      Articulate the questions raised by the evidence debate
4.      Examine selected nursing foci using an evidence-based framework
5.      Integrate selected nursing theories with evidence-based practice frameworks to guide nursing practice
6.      Develop a theory-guided, evidence based practice nursing focus
