Learning Objective #1: Describe the ASPAN Safety Matrix
Learning Objective #2: Discuss the research study that investigates the safety culture in the perianesthesia setting

This is a study completed in conjunction with the American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses to examine the research question “What is the current safety practice among perianesthesia nurses in their main perianesthesia setting? Participants responded to a Demographic Data Form and the ASPAN Safety Matrix Survey – Assessing the Safety Culture in the Perianesthesia Setting. The sample included 638 perianesthesia nurses who came from a variety of settings: Pre Admission Testing 9.2%; Preop holding area 15.8%; Phase I PACU 59.9%; and Phase II & III PACU14.9%. Safety priorities included Medication Safety, Equipment Safety, Personnel Safety, Environmental Safety and Patient Safety. Safety priorities have been identified for the perianesthesia setting. Future research will include refinement of the instrument ASPAN Safety Matrix Survey – Assessing the Safety Culture in the Perianesthesia Setting, as well as identification of interventions to increase safety awareness and improve safety outcomes in the perianesthesia setting.
