Learning Objective #1: discuss process of development of an instrument for measuring health-related hardiness in Thai women.
Learning Objective #2: discuss procedures for examining the psychometric properties of a new instrument.

The existing instruments widely used to measure health-related hardiness in persons with cancer were developed based on male perspective that is different from female perspective.  Therefore, a specific measure for women is needed. This methodological study aimed to develop a feminine hardiness scale for Thai women with cancer of reproductive system and to examine its psychometric properties. Generation of the scale items was guided by a conceptual model of feminine hardiness and a literature review.  Content validity was reviewed by five nursing experts. Field testing was conducted with 205 Thai women with reproductive system cancer who were admitting for treatment at two hospitals in Northern Thailand. Exploratory factor analysis and item analysis were performed to examine the scale construct validity and reliability. The Feminine Hardiness Scale consists of two subscales with 26 items. Its content validity index was .90 and the internal consistency reliability of the total scale was .95. Further criterion-related validity assessment was recommended.
