Learning Objective #1: describe the nature and principles of 'internal evidence' and 'clarification of mandate' and is able to integrate the concepts into the EBN-process.
Learning Objective #2: name different aspects and approaches of the implementation of EBN in Germany.

The German Center for Evidence-based Nursing is a member of the International Network of the Centers for Evidence-based Nursing. It has been founded in 1998 by Professor Johann Behrens and its activities center mainly on three areas:

1. Promotion and development of the methodology of evidence-based nursing (EBN)

Two main concepts were originally added to the methodology of EBN. First the nature of evidence was examined in detail resulting in two complementary kinds of evidence – ‘internal’ and ‘external evidence (Behrens & Langer, 2004). Second the steps of the EBN-process were extended by one additional step ‘clarification of mandate’ (Behrens & Langer, 2006).

2. Dissemination of EBN

Since the founding year workshops are held annually by the trainers of the German Center. EBN has been integrated in the education of nursing science students. Additionally the German Center prospered to a central institution for non-university education of EBN-experts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

3. Collaboration with other health professions and institutions to implement and foster evidence-based practice

The German Center for Evidence-based Nursing is involved into the guideline development process of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF) in Germany and represents nursing and additional health professions in interdisciplinary guidelines.

Achievements of the last 10 years will be presented in detail and a perspective for the 21st century will be developed with the main focus of the two concepts ‘internal evidence’ and ‘clarification of mandate’ and their impact on EBN.
