Learning Objective #1: explore the process involved in the genesis of community consortium to promote evidence-based practice.
Learning Objective #2: describe the benefits and challenges of a community consortium to promote evidence-based practice.

Evidence-based practice has been recognized by the health care community as well as by regulatory agencies as being the gold standard for the provision of safe and compassionate health care to patients.  Unified by a shared vision to extend evidence-based practice in the nursing community a group of health care professionals from service and academia joined together forming The Consortium for Nursing Excellence, San Diego in March 2006.  The partnership represents a novel approach to pool creative, intellectual, and capital resources to strengthen the practice of nursing within the county of San Diego.  The consortium represents a partnership between five health care systems (10 acute care hospitals) and two academic institutions within the community.

The consortium has two initiatives underway.  The first is a descriptive research project; data collection is underway December 2006 and January 2007 with data analysis planned for February and March 2007.  The intent of this descriptive inquiry is to establish a baseline understanding prior to the implementation of an evidence-based practice educational initiative.  The second is an evidence-based practice institute.  The institute is an innovative staff development and mentorship model intended to empower advanced practice nurses to become primary mentors who enable staff nurses to understand and participate in evidence-based nursing care.  The model offers the opportunity for professional development for both advanced practice nurses and staff nurses, thereby enhancing their job satisfaction with and fostering career development.   The institute extends over six months (January 2006 through May 2007) and will provide theory and experiential learning opportunities for the advanced practice/staff nurse dyads to implement a clinical practice project.  This presentation will explore the genesis of the consortium.
