Learning Objective #1: To identify the key ingredients of a successful framework utilized in planning for creating a foundation for an evidence informed decision making culture.
Learning Objective #2: To identify strategies for implementing a cultural change strategy designed to embed evidence in decision making practices at all levels within an organization

Background: Currently, the use of research evidence to inform management decision making in health care is lacking.  At the same time, however, there are expanding bodies of knowledge that can assist decision makers and health care providers in making smarter decisions based on evidence that is both current and relevant.

 Learning Objectives:

  1. To identify the key ingredients of a successful framework utilized in planning for creating a foundation for an evidence informed decision making culture.
  2. To identify strategies for implementing a cultural change strategy designed to embed evidence in decision making practices at all levels within an organization

Methods: Creating a culture where staff routinely consult the best available evidence to inform clinical and management decision making requires key investments, leadership and multiple knowledge transfer strategies.  Senior staff views including the CEO and Chief Nurse Executives regarding the multistage approach utilized for laying the foundation of this cultural change will be discussed.

Conclusion: Many organizations are working to successfully implement evidence into all their practices.  In an era of information technology, and increasing accountability, the use of evidence to inform policy and influence strategy within the health care system is critical for today’s nursing leaders as they transform the health system of tomorrow.
