WORKSHOP: Clinical and Healthy Work Environment Best Practices: Powerful Guides in Your Road Map to Excellence
Learning Objective #1: Describe successful models of guideline implementation, including strategies for assessing guideline quality.
Learning Objective #2: Describe how work environment best practices support healthcare organizations in implementing clinical guidelines to create excellence in practice.
The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario, through their guideline development programs (both clinical and workplace environment) have recognized the synergy between healthy workplaces and uptake of clinical knowledge in creating excellence in nursing practice and patient care. A number of health care challenges related to patient safety, quality care, retention of qualified staff and recruitment of nurses into the profession are directly or indirectly linked to the quality of the work environment. However, organizational cultures that are supportive of evidence-based practice with a focus on leadership, team work, staff development and retention of staff are more likely to succeed in achieving clinical excellence. This workshop will provide participants with a framework for linking work environment best practices with evidence based clinical guidelines in order to create positive outcomes for patients, nurses and organizations. There will be a focus on tools for assessing quality of best practice guidelines, in order to ensure that the evidence being implemented is the best available. Successful implementation models will be described and illustrated with real-life examples in relation to work environment and clinical guideline implementation. As part of this approach, a variety of methods for engaging key stakeholders across professions will be addressed. Participants will leave with a set of guides to creating quality care and quality work environments.
