Using Complex Synergistic System as a Conceptual Framework in Global Partnership
Learning Objective #1: The learner will be able to define the health, educational and legal determinants in promoting international opportunities for partnerships for training future caregivers.
Learning Objective #2: The leraner will be able to translate knowledge into practice by integrating technological advances with evidence-based research in caring for survivors of sexual assault globally.
The purpose of this symposium is to report on a partnership synergy achieved in developing an Internet-enabled HELP program for use in training future trainers from the U.S., Jordan, and the Philippines. Providing HELP (Health, Education and Legal Program) for survivors of sexual assault, rape and abuse helps to reduce the health, social, public, and safety impact of sexual assault, rape and abuse against women. We have completed the development of a “Train the Trainer” (TT) program in HELP. Sexual assault, rape, and abuse (SARA) is not only a public health, human rights, and safety issue in the U. S., Jordan and the Philippines, but a way of life for many women in villages and communities globally, seriously affecting their health and well being. To each survivor of SARA, the horror, loss, confusion, helplessness, hopelessness, and trauma affects their health and world view. Creating paths toward the development of effective treatment for survivors of SARA is filled with political, economic, and social obstacles. Combining health, education, and legal process (HELP) in the provision of care was effective as found in our search of the literature for best practices and preferred, as told to us, by survivors of SARA. The lack of evidence-based Internet-enabled intervention program for survivors of SARA developed by a transdisciplinary diverse group of healthcare and service providers such as nurses, physicians, lawyers, advocates, social workers, police, and consumers/survivors prompted us to develop HELP. This Internet-enabled HELP may be a tool to transcend distance, lack of resources and support, and fear of further re-victimization, blame and shame in survivors of SARA recognizing the socioeconomic determinants in meeting the needs of this vulnerable population of women first in Pittsburgh, Jordan, and General Santos City, Philippines and later globally
