Lessons from Multiple Leaders Who Have Implemented Evidence-Based Practice at the Point of Care Using Technology
Learning Objective #1: Correlate the nature of the fundamental work to implement and sustain evidence-based practice at the point of care to sustainable clinical outcomes.
Learning Objective #2: Differentiate between referential and executable evidence-based content within technology.
This symposium will focus on the lessions learned in the field from an International Consortium leading the work to implement evidence-based practice at the point of care using technology to achieve that end. The national focus on patient safety has brougt an expectation that knowing the evidence related to best practice is an accountability of each professional. Those in leadership know the statistics related to errors and variance of care that puts patients and staff at risk. There has been much written about the need to stop errors, duplication and repetition. Technology has come into focus as a tool to help stop, for example, medication errors, unclear physician orders and to help with documentation, a task often dreaded by clinicians. No leader in healthcare will escape the accountability to implement technology. It is essential that every leader understand what technology can and cannot do. The role of technology to support evidence-based practice requires a deep understanding of every component of practice, a concise understanding of the daily realities of the thought and workflow process of the clinicians and a clear awareness of what technology can and cannot do for those who give and receive care. A Nurse CEO, a Chief Nursing Officer and the Founder of an International Consortium will share the lessons from a consortium of over 230 clinical settings who have implemented evidence-based practice and will highlight the lessons from 21 clinical settings live on technology intentionally designed to bring executable evidence-based content to the fingertips of clinicians.
