Description/Overview: Globalization involves a complex process in which time and space are compressed by innovations, technology and communications systems, resulting in the free flow of goods, services and people. As the world grows smaller from the realities of globalization, nurses across the globe share a commonality- Caring for increasingly diverse consumers of healthcare services. Health has become a global concern, so also has nursing become a global profession. To make a difference for patients, nurses must possess the skills necessary to function in a global environment by having the ability and resources to embrace diversity, utilize inclusive framework in decision making, and practice culturally competent care. Nurse leaders and executives who lead organizations have the responsibility of providing the resources that are needed for their nurses to function competently in a global environment. This symposium will share how an academic medical center’s nurse leaders designed a program that helped create an environment where nurses are empowered to champion diversity and inclusiveness, build capacity for culturally competent care, while engaging frontline clinical nurses to be global leaders and practitioners from the patient’s bedside and among healthcare providers.
