Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to explore immigrant Asian women’s postpartum stress, social support, depression, and health status in Taiwanese cultural context

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to identify predictors of immigrant Asian women’s postpartum health status.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore immigrant Asian women’s postpartum stress, social support, depression, and health status in Taiwanese cultural context. Further to identify predictors of immigrant Asian women’s postpartum health status.

Methods:  A sample of 340 immigrant postpartum women was recruited from ten general hospitals and one obstetric clinic from March 2005 to September 2006. The Hung postpartum stress scale, the Beck depression inventory-II, the social support scale, and the Chinese health questionnaire were used for this study.

Results: The results showed that immigrant women’s postpartum health status was significantly different by their different key helper and different depression status. The results also showed that immigrant women’s postpartum health status was significantly different by their mean scores of social support and postpartum stress. Logistic regression indicated a one-point increase in immigrant women’s postpartum stress increased the likelihood that the women would have minor psychiatric morbidity by 1.04 times.

Conclusion: Health care professionals should attend not only to the basic income and support needs of immigrant postpartum women but also to their postpartum stress and stressors by ensuring effective interventions and referral mechanisms.
