Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to identify different motivations for risk reducing surgery after BRCA genetic testing for ovarian cancer.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to identify areas where people may need additional education about risk reduction surgery.

Purpose: This is a literature review presentation that compares some of reasons why women would choose to undergo risk reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) to reduce their risk for ovarian cancer after having genetic testing for BRCA 1 and 2 mutations. Some of these factors include being in a peri-menopausal state, having a family history of ovarian cancer, and the perceived risk of developing ovarian cancer. The limitations of BRCA genetic testing are also considered. Methods: Literature review of current information about influences that affect why women choose to undergo risk reduction surgery. Results: Women who are in a peri-menopausal state, have a family history of ovarian cancer, and a perceived risk of ovarian cancer can all influence a woman's decision making process. Conclusion: This review can aid healthcare providers to assess different motivations for risk reducing surgery and identify areas where patients may need additional education about risk reducing surgery.
