Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to discuss trends and perceptions related to the development of spirituality by student nurses.
Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to list recommendations for strategies in relation to the development of the concept of spirituality in beginning nurses.
Nursing care strives to present a holistic approach to the delivery of health care to individuals encountered by the nurse. The Institute of Medicine (2010) acknowledges the valuable service nursing through a caring philosophy provides to holistic health care. The aspect of spirituality for the nurse is somewhat a stressful component within the holistic approach. Too often spirituality is viewed as religion. Spirituality supports and sustains an individual who is confronting overwhelming and challenging stressors. Burnell (2010) states “nursing research has yet to establish how nurses connect with patient’s spirituality and with compassion” (p. 309). Research to discover how nurses embrace the delicate area of spirituality is needed for the holistic goal of nursing. Conceptually, holistic nursing care incorporates the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects within the management of the patient’s plan of care.
Method:
Faculty members need to assess the initial engagement with spirituality of students to allow for a plan of action facilitating the further development of the skills. By carefully examining the journaling provided by students, trends, ideas, and thoughts related to where students began in relation to spirituality can be identified. This study will utilize a retrospective qualitative review of materials from a class assignment to discuss the development of an individual’s perception of spirituality.
Sample:
A convenience sampling from narratives provided from three nursing program group BLOGs will be analyzed for trends and perceptions. Entries related to designated questions guiding the journaling will be selected for review.
Analysis:
Researchers will carefully identify trends and perceptions within the data. Following completion of the data analysis, the trends and perceptions identified by researchers will be examined for similarities and differences. This presentation will discuss the findings from the qualitative review of the selected narratives and recommendations for strategies will be provided for holistic nursing care.
