Learning Objective 1: The ability to understand version 6.3 of the nursing model on education.

Learning Objective 2: The ability to understand the usefulness of the nursing model on education.

Purpose

To develop the nursing model on education and study its usefulness in action research.

Methods

The model was developed starting in 1994 with 215 cases of patient education, worked on by 24 researchers to extract, describe, and analyze situations related to patient behavior modification in order to create a model. To study the usefulness of the model, an action research study was begun in March 2007, and between February 2008 and July 2010 was conducted in three hospitals. The research participants included researchers from the model development research group and 12 clinical nurses, as well as 31 other clinical nurses who participated in the study meetings.

Results

The model is comprised of the following elements, aimed at improving the nurses' abilities in educational practice: lead/cue words and behaviors and their intuitive interpretation; the reality of the patient as a person trying to manage living and sharing that meaning; tailoring nursing to the treatment; interaction techniques based on working with patients to find solutions; and the atmosphere created by a patient education expert.

How the action research, conducted in three locations, was carried out depended on the standpoint of the facilitator (head nurse for education, staff nurse (Certified Nurse Specialist), and university researcher, respectively), but the participants made comments regarding the importance of the various elements in practice, and it was confirmed that nursing care using the model led to high-quality patient education. Even the clinical nurses who were not research participants became able to speak about patient behavior and changes, and they planned new case review meetings for cases that used the model, among other actions.

Conclusion

The nursing model on education was refined and updated to version 6.3.

The usefulness of the nursing model on education in action research that used the model was confirmed.
