Learning Objective 1: the aim of this study was to explore the relationship of falls to injury among hospital in patients

Learning Objective 2: Falls and falls-injury in hospital patients have been recognized as one of the major issue in care management

Purpose:

The study population was focused on patients who admitted to acute or chronic wards was being able to registry the events of falls with stability and regularity during this period. A total of 1099 patients were enrolled in this study.

Methods:

We conducted a retrospective observational study, which was run on falls registry database for 2005 to 2008. Data collection was considered the variables including patient’s characteristics, subject factors such as medical conditions, environment, intensive care, area of care and others in association with falls-injury

Results:

We identified 822 falls patients with no injury and 277 falls patients with injury. In multivariate analysis, age ( OR=1.01, 95%CI: 1.01-1.02), unsafe environment ( OR=1.46, 95%CI: 1.10-1.95) and admission with company ( OR=1.5, 95%CI: 1.11-2.03) are independent risk factors associated with injury occurring after falls. In this study, major risk factors in association with falls-injury was elucidated for improving the risk management policy in hospital patients.

Conclusion:

From the 277 falls patients with injury, the risk factors were identified which will benefit for the nurse to assess the patients and to prevent patients fall- injury.
