Learning Objective 1: To improve students skills to use the waiting room as a seeting to communicate health related issues to the clients, stimulating peer education.
Learning Objective 2: To allow the nursing students to learn all the steps recommended to build a lecture in health education context
This study presents the learning experience of undergraduate nursing students in the theory and practice of health education, during their internship in a specialized clinic on HIV and AIDS, "Casa da AIDS" in São Paulo, Brazil.At this health care service the undergraduate students the School of Nursing of the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo, have the practice of the o course of Nursing in Public Health focusing in transmissible diseases.During this internship the students focus on health education. The strategy adopted was to perform a small survey at the wainting room and ask the clients about issues of their interest. The results were analysed and ranked according to the client's opinion. Among the subjects were: antiretroviral; prejudice; updates on vaccines and stem cells; risk of HIV infection; relationship among discordant couples, self-help, depression and anxiety; neuropathies and dementia related to HIV, quality of life and other sexually transmitted diseases.Based on that the students organized and performed a series of lectures, held from 2007 to the first semester of 2010, addressing the selected topics. After that, the students performed self assessment regarding to their own performance and evaluated the experience as "very good".The students received guidance on the preparation of their lectures, including how to perform a review, techniques on how to buid a good lecture, personal posture, how to conduct a discussion and how to organize folders.The students'evaluation was very positive and allowed them to be aware of the importance of nurses' performance in educational activities.
