The purpose of this exploratory, descriptive study was to apply a nursing data collection instrument for implementation of the Nursing process to spinal cord injured patients. The instrument was applied in 12 patients with spinal cord injury in a public center for rehabilitation in São Paulo. The conclusions were: 1. the instrument allows the identification of the main universal self care requirements and that the maintenance of the urinary bladder elimination and the risk prevention of death were the self care requisites to be modified. 2. the data collection instrument is suitable to implement the Nursing process, however it is essential its revaluation due to the small sample of application.
