It is a current social problem in Japan that a turnover of a nurse is high. After the law was revised in 2001, hospitals have been categorized into a general hospital and a sanatorium type hospital. If a nurse can be deployed in an appropriate hospital with considering of the nurse's personality traits, the high turnover of the nurse would be avoided. The aim of this study was to assess the difference of the personality traits of the nurses in the various medical facilities. And if the difference exists, what relation is between personality traits and types of medical facilities. The questionnaires of personality traits test were distributed to 2 general hospitals and 3 sanatorium type hospitals. We have gotten 271 valid responses from the nurses, and it comes 82% response rate. In all the responses, 61% were from the general hospitals, and 39% were from the sanatorium type hospitals. The respondents were 20 men and 251 women, and 228 nurses and 43 licensed practical nurses. The average ages of the general hospitals and the sanatorium type hospitals were 33.2 and 43.6, respectively. The personality traits in the general hospitals and the sanatorium type hospitals were compared. The score of empathy, endurance and nervousness were high, and the score of self-display and uncooperativeness was low in both types of hospitals. Significant difference was revealed with endurance, self-display and dishonesty. The findings suggest that some personality traits were different in two groups .It may occur from property of facilities. Nurses have required briskly behavior at general hospitals. On the other hand, nurses have required tolerantly behavior at sanatorium type hospitals.

The research revealed that the nurses’ personality traits were different between types of medical facilities.
