Narrative Approach for Suicide Prevention of People with Depression

Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to know the depression people will change mood to free from self-reproach and persecution complex by narrative approach.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to know the disappearance of suicidal thoughts from the depression people by narrative approach.

Purpose: This study is to clarify the suicide prevention effect for the depression people by Narrative approach.

 Methods:  10 Subjects were diagnosed as the depression and treated ingestion living at home. They were our nursing consultation outpatients. Age;26-70, male 3 female 7  and data was  due to recording sessions by narrative approach by tape recording with their permission and description papers. We used PHQ9 (self-rating depression scale) before and after the sessions. Average interview time were 60 minutes, average number of sessions were 8 times. This study was analyzed by qualitative method with modified grounded theory approach. This study was started after approving from the Ethical Committee of Kanazawa University. 

 Results: 3 categories, 'The anxiety of losing their concentration', 'The consciousness of unstable mind', 'Self-reproach for family' and 7 sub-categories were extracted from the data. The narrative approach for the subjects by the nurse consultation improved to get the power of life skills and coping strategies self-care at crisis of subjects. And they became free from self-reproach and persecution complex after the sessions. 6 subjects became to free from suicidal thought. But other subjects were worried about confliction and anxiety and repeated suicidal thought sometimes. All subjects changed scores of PHQ9 better than before.

    Conclusion: The depression people could change their negative thought patterns (keep wishing for suicide, extreme thought) by narrative approach. But the part of them was keeping their persistence thought. These improved the need to continue the medical and psychological treatment. The result of this study showed the narrative approach was effective in depression people and suicide prevention.
