Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to compare the exclusive breastfeeding duration rates with other place.

Abstract : The purpose of  this study was to compare a group of mothers treated with the clinical nursing

practice guideline for promoting breastfeeding  with a group of mothers receiving the usual nursing care. The sample consisted of  500  mothers and their normal newborns who were at the postpartum ward of

Ramathibodi Hospital, during June - October 2009. The sample was assigned into 2 groups: a control group and an experimental group. The control group consisted of  250  mothers and their newborns receiving the usual nursing care. The experimental group consisted of  250  mothers and their  newborns

receiving nursing care based on the clinical nursing practice guideline for promoting breastfeeding.      The  results showed  that the breastfeeding duration rates in the experimental group were significantly higher than those of  the control group. It was found that the exclusive breastfeeding duration rates  in the

experimental group on discharge, at 2 months, 4  months and 6 months  were 90 %, 69.6 %,42.4 and

3.6 %  respectively. For the control group it was found that the  exclusive breastfeeding duration rates

on discharge, 2 months, 4  months and  6 months  were 75 %, 54 %,28 and  2.4 % respectively.

This study suggests that the CNPG is certainly  helpful for nurse-midwives to promote  breastfeeding.

However, the CNPG for promoting  breastfeeding should  be implemented with a  complete cycle.
