Pain, Pain Management and Health State of Knee Osteoarthritis Patients at Ramathibodi Hospital

Learning Objective 2: to measure health status and factors related to pain in knee osteoarthritis patients

  • Purpose: This descriptive study was performed to describe pain, pain management, health status and factors related to pain in knee osteoarthritis patients.
  • Methods:  One hundred purposive samples were selected from orthopedics clinic and wards at Ramathibodi Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, during December 2009 to November 2010.  Patients were assessed by the Brief Pain Inventory Scale and the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale 2: AIMS2 (Meenan, 1992). 
  • Results: The majority was female (86.1%) with the mean age of 67.3 (SD = 8.2).   Most of them (80.2%) had underlying diseases and Hypertension was the most (73.3%).  Results indicated that the subjects had experiences high level of worst pain, moderate level of average pain, mild level of least pain and mild level of pain now.  Most of them managed pain by going to hospital and caring by themselves.  In addition, the result showed that the component of support from family and friends was the best scale of health measurement. The mean scores of the AIMS2 had important impact on the top 3 components of the health status of the samples: arthritis pain, social activities and household tasks.  There were statistically significant correlations between worst pain and mobility level, social activities, arthritis pain, work and level of tension (p < .01).  Age, sex and BMI were not statistically significant correlation with worst pain.
  • Conclusion: The result of this study is useful for nurses to concern and improve nursing practice for pain management in the elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis to enhance more effective nursing outcome and improve patients quality of live.
