Opinion of Professionals at a Non-Specialized Emergency Service about Psychiatric Emergency Care

Purpose: The objective was to identify and to describe the views of health professionals who work at a non-specialized emergency service about care to patients in psychiatric emergencies

Methods:  This is a quantitative and qualitative study. Data collection was performed by applying a questionnaire with open and multiple choice questions to professionals working in the emergency room of a non-specialized academic health center in the state of Sao Paulo. Data were analyzed using the program EPINFO and content analysis.

 Results: Of the 23 study participants, 60.87% were female, 65.22% were less than 35 years, 47.83% were nursing technicians, 13.04% were nurses and 39.13% were other professionals. The training time ranged from 5 to 36 years. Most of them reported problems related to mental health in the health service they work, mainly involving the instability of the psychiatric disorder and feelings of despair and anguish. Moreover, they mentioned lack of technical knowledge and emotional handling to deal with such cases. Professionals identify as their main needs the inclusion on continuing education programs, knowledge about safety for the patient and the professional, knowledge about the various types of mental disorders and about management of family members.v

 Conclusion: According to the findings of the study, we identified the urgent need to include training courses and continuing education related to the demands of mental health for professionals working in emergency services, in order to improve the quality of patient care in situations of psychiatric emergency.
