Suicide Profile in Saltillo City from January 2007 to December 2009

To describe the prevalence of suicide in Saltillo, Coah. city, identify the reasons and methods for suicide and attempted suicide from january 2007 to december 2009.

Methods:  Sample size was 203 minutes of record of suicide (completed act) and / or attempted suicide (an act not consummated), registered at the Attorney General of Coahuila State in Saltillo city from January 2007 to December 2009.   Sample test was by census. Minutes includes sociodemographic characteristics and reasons and methods for suicide and attemped suicide.

Results:  Suicide prevalence 70.4% (143 death certificates of suicide), which 89% was males.  Attemped suicide prevalence 29.6%  (60 reports of attemped suicide, not consummated act) which 63% were men.  The age range with the highest suicide prevalence was from 20 to 29 years old (27%).

Among reasons registered on death certificates, which bashed subject was depression 24%, followed by emotional and economic problems 15.3% and 14.1% respectively. 

Regarding methods of suicide, the most common way was the hanging 81%, followed by us of firearm 8.4%.  While in attemped suicide not consummated methods, the most common way was hanging 65%, followed by slash their wrists 25%.

Conclusions.  Young men are more affected in this community by depression, mainly  reason for committing suicide.
