B 10 Operationalizing Cultural Competence in Clinical Settings: A Novel Approach

Monday, July 11, 2011: 1:45 PM-3:00 PM
Description/Overview: The last few decades has witnessed unparalleled growth in human, cultural and organizational diversity in the U.S and across the globe. At the heels of this diversity stand disparities that exist in healthcare services and patient outcomes. Culturally competent care has been identified as a vehicle for bridging healthcare disparities, with a potential to improve health outcomes for culturally diverse patient populations. Clinicians who value and are committed to providing culturally competent services may be uncertain about how best to operationalize the concept. A committed leadership that is willing to provide strategic direction and resources to support providers, along with the application of the principles of cultural humility and gracious space, and effective culturally competent educational programs may serve to bridge the gap between theories of cultural competence and operationalization of the concept in practice.
Learner Objective #1: Discuss cultural competence as a strategic concept for improving health outcomes for diverse patient populations
