Age-Friendly Hospitals Prepare to Medical Practitioners of the Knowledge and Attitudes of the Elderly

Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to understand the aging knowledge and attitudes of the Health Promoting Hospital Staffs in Northern Taiwan.

Purpose:

  The purpose is to investigate the aging knowledge and attitudes of the Hospital Staffs (both medical and non-medical ones) in Northern Taiwan.

Methods:

 A convenience sampling was using structured questionnaires online. The evaluation of aging knowledge and attitude was using Palmore’s Facts on Ageing Quiz 1. In order to investigate the geriatrics attitudes, this research used the UCLA Geriatrics Attitudes Scale. Statistics analysis included independent t-test, Fisher’s exact probability test, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Wald Chi-Square test, logistic and linear regression.

Results:

 336 effective questionnaires were recovered, which is 57.5% of the total amount of questionnaires administered. 267 of the questionnaires are from medical staffs and 69 of them from non-medical ones. The present research found out that hospital staffs have a negative level of knowledge on elderly (mean= 59.32, ex: Most old people have no interest in, or capacity for, sexual relations.), whereas hospital staffs have a slight positive attitudes to do with older adults.

Conclusion:

Although the socio-demographic difference among hospital staffs, there is no statistical difference among staffs concerning to their scores in knowledge and attitude scales, but has a negative trend. Therefore, adding more educational courses related to older adults in the college as well as in the medical training, which can prepare hospital staffs improve their knowledge and attitude toward elderly people, and also has benefits on promoting aging friendly Hospital, as well as increasing their willingness to choose jobs related to working with elderly people.
