L 14 Nursing Voices at the UN: Transition from MDGs to SDGs

Monday, 27 July 2015: 8:30 AM-9:45 AM
Description/Overview: In the five years of accreditation with the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) , STTI UN representatives have made significant contributions within the UN NGO community and to the Honor Society membership and organization. Through active participation and leadership in UN NGO Committees, reps have collaborated with UN and nursing colleagues to present recommendations to the General Assembly regarding issues related to health and mental heath and girls and women. In planning for the post 2015 Agenda our extensive efforts have resulted in educating UN colleagues regarding the importance and contributions of nurses worldwide. Additionally, we have developed a plan of informing the global nursing community about the work and activities of the UN and the importance of nurses’ contributions to the UN System. Representatives have developed innovative approaches to promoting civil society engagement in the Post 2015 Agenda. In response to the UN mandate for consultation and collaboration regarding the transition from MDGs to SDGs and a constituent reported lack of knowledge to do so, we formed a diverse, intergenerational, gender balanced working group of DPI/ECOSOC representatives & youth reps, developing an on line (CEU accredited) instructional Briefing (The World Nurses Want), including references, materials and participation links. We formulated a corresponding multi-phased international presentation and implementation strategy and social media campaign. Our program has been so successful, we have been asked by the DPI to assist other NGOs in their own endeavors. Feedback regarding our information, education and advocacy initiative has been excellent. This symposium will present our international experiences and data from our global outreach regarding SGDs and priorities to nurses in over 100 countries.
