Purpose: The project aimed at promoting the recognition rate of nursing staff in bindle care for catheter-associated Urinary Tract infections in medical ward In 2016, the hospital Urinary Tract infection density was 0.98 per mille, while that in medical ward was 2.31 per mille, which was the highest among all wards.

Methods: Questionnaires completed by the nursing staff in March 2017 showed that they exhibited recognition rate of 53.5% .Analysis of the interviews and questionnaires data identified major causes of catheter-associated Urinary Tract infections, including percentage of correct care by nursing staff, lack of evaluation criteria regarding urinary catheter removal, lack of education about urinary tract care ,lack of audit system, lack of tags and good fixation for urinary bag.

Results: We proposed solution which including standardized the indwelling catheter removal procedures, made multimedia CD for education of indwelling catheter care, and set up examination of indwelling catheter care skills, organizing in-service education, establishing an holders for urinary bags. Improvements were observed after implementing these strategies.

Not only the recognition rate increased to 100% in bundle care for catheter-associated Urinary Tract infections among nursing staff ,but also the catheter-associated Urinary Tract density of our medical ward decreased from 2.31 per mille to 1.05 per mille.

Conclusion: By revising guidelines of indwelling urinary catheter, holding training workshops, making notice of emptying urine bag, revising information of CAUTI Bundle Care, and making teaching videos about placing and care of indwelling urinary catheter, we lowered our incidence rate of CAUTI from 2.31‰ to 1.05‰. This showed the accuracy of implementation actually affected incidence of CAUTI.

We hope that the project can be extended in parallel to improve the experience of others medical ward and enhance quality of patient care.
