Why educate? In our 216 bed Medical-Surgical Department, we found 2 major reasons to provide supplemental nursing education. First, to no one’s surprise, we found knowledge deficits. The reality was that if we wanted the nurses to perform like the skilled nurses that we envisioned, our staff needed a higher-level knowledge base than they began with. Second, we wanted to attract and retain professional nurses with a commitment to life-long learning.
This session will discuss how we identified learning needs, how we selected and developed multiple educational opportunities and how we evaluated the effectiveness of educational interventions.
