Initiating Evidence-Based, Data-Driven Change in a Medical Surgical Nursing Department

Learning Objective #1: Identify characteristics of a nursing unit in trouble
Learning Objective #2: Describe methodologies used to develop professional practice outcomes
This Symposium will provide the audience with an opportunity to follow a nursing department’s evolution as it embarked upon an effort to improve the professional practice environment. The influence of the interventions related to patient satisfaction, staff satisfaction, prevalence survey results, nursing vacancies, turnover and supplemental staff usage will be explored. An overview of the department's approach to facilitating evidence-based practice through best practices and research will be followed by an introduction to the modalities that were either developed and/or used to positively affect staff development related to the concept of knowledge workers. An overview of ongoing departmental quality care initiatives will be highlighted by a case study presentation of the development of a unit-based five-year staff development plan. The presentation will culminate with important data that will reveal that the adage that quality pays for itself is indeed true as the returns on investment related to not only patient care outcomes, but the benefits of unit stability will be discussed.
