Research Utilization or Evidence-Based Practice: A Model for International Nursing Education

Learning Objective #1: Compare and contrast key elements of research utilization and evidence-based practice
Learning Objective #2: Describe an educational model for teaching research utlization/evidence-based practice internationally
The purpose of this Symposium is to present a model for an international approach to integration of research utilization into a graduate curriculum in nursing education through shared faculty from academia and community based nursing practice. The first paper focuses on the history, development and global implications of the model with specific emphasis on the social imperatives that drive such an approach. Special attention will be given to the concepts of discovery and innovation that are an integral part of the success of the model framed in an historical discussion of progressive development over ten years of implementation. Projects resulting from this endeavor and the implications for translational research in the international context will be discussed. The second paper will provide an analysis of the mechanisms of joining forces with education from a community, practice and international policy perspective as an example of innovation and discovery. The two authors who will present this perspective have been actively involved at top levels of nursing leadership in the state in addressing nursing practice and education initiatives. Both have participated in the integration of research in practice and in teaching the concepts of research utilization as co-faculty with graduate faculty in the College of Nursing. The third paper will focus on actual projects that were implemented in a community based setting and international setting and the type of mentoring from a primary care perspective that facilitated the successful implementation of this approach. Summary of student successes and barriers that were encountered will be discussed. There are two authors per paper.
