This presentation is part of : Value-Added Services Can't Age Discriminate: Utilizing Evidence-Based Nursing Practice to Capitalize on the Brain Trust of Senior Nurses
The Psycho-Social Characteristics of An Aging RN Workforce
JoAnn Kamencik, RN, PhD, MBA, Conroe Regional Medical Center, Conroe, TX, USA

In order to fully appreciate the complexities surrounding the issues of age-associated job performance, one must first have an understanding of both the intrinsic and extrinsic motivators of an aging RN workforce. A skilled leader must possess the ability to compare and contrast these motivators with the health care facility's existing infrastructure, the financial climate of health care in general, and the commonalities that exist between two groups that are motivated by different rewards. This presentation will illustrate what drives senior nurses to perform, both socially and professionally, the way they do and how, as experienced patient care providers, they can survive and thrive within work groups having different value systems from their own.
