SYMPOSIUM

Health Risks and Reducing Health Disparities in Minority or Low Income Populations
Learning Objective #1: Identify health risks in the minority or low income populations in the studies presented
Learning Objective #2: Identify factors that contribute to health risk in the minority and low income populations presented
This symposium will present research on health risks of specific minority or low income populations in the United States from the Center for the Advancement of Health Disparities Research, an NINR funded partnership between the Schools of Nursing at the University of Washington and the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. The research presentations include environmental threats to rural low-income children, community participatory research in mapping of tobacco sales in a Native Hawaiian community, the problematic areas encountered in instrument translation for Filipino families, health risks for Filipino American grandparent caregivers of grandchildren, and the assessment of physical activity and function of Filipino elders. Many of the research areas on the populations understudy are limited, thus, the researchers are carving previously unexplored areas of scholarship. It is timely given the national call to increase quality and years of healthy life which can be done by reducing health risks, thus, eliminating health disparities in minority and low income populations. Of the 10 leading health indicators cited in Healthy People 2010, the following will be discussed: physical activity, tobacco use, environmental quality, and mental health.
