Learning Objective 1: Describe current nursing trends in distance learning education and technology infused teaching methodologies

Learning Objective 2: Outline successful teaching and learning strategies for entry level nursing students as they prepare for practice in a technology rich healthcare arena

The Successful Online Learning tutorial (SOLO) was created for nursing students by a nursing faculty member who observed a consistent need for better preparation of these learners prior to entry into a world of web based teaching methodologies.  More than 600 nursing students have completed SOLO and have reported statistically significant improvements in computer skills and overall readiness for distance learning.  The SOLO course successfully guides students to self-assess computer competencies, increase confidence with commonly used technological tools, and determine compatibility for distance learning.  SOLO also provides a framework of embedded tutorials from which students may select based on self-identified need.  SOLO helps prepare entry level students for web enhanced nursing education.  SOLO also enhances the ability of graduate nursing students' to grow as nurse scholars who can readily identify and access electronic resources and data bases that support nursing research and evidence based practice.
