WORKSHOP: Technology Innovations in Nursing Education

Description/Overview: The application of knowledge, rather than straight didactic content, is a hallmark of nursing education programs and necessitates the use of technologies that allow students to think outside of traditional educational models. The use of technology in educational programs allow the faculty to engage students in application level activities in and out of the classroom. Faculty and practitioners who are able to engage students with the use of technology provide them a tool for exploration and problem solving in their work and clinical environments. Teaching students to use technology effectively, then translates into the meaningful use of technology at the bedside for effective, efficient patient education, provider updates and at your fingertip resources. This type of engagement and active learning will allow nurses to focus in on the real problems facing healthcare and empower them to be the change agents of the future in the improvement of the triple aim- improved patient outcomes, increased patient satisfaction and decreased healthcare cost. This session will be focused on the culture, operationalization and integration of technology into nursing education. Theoretical frameworks for the integration of technology will be described including the TPAC and SAMR models. These models provide a strong foundation for how to approach technology in a meaningful way that helps students to learn differently. Apps for use in nursing education and practice will be explored and meaningful use of those tools will be discussed. Barriers to implementation of technology will also be confronted and strategies for overcoming these challenge discussed. Technology is not just device use and innovation does not evolve from device use. The innovation in education comes from thoughtful integration of active learning paired with expert faculty using powerful technology driven informatics tools. The purpose for the session is for all participants to leave with a deep understanding of targeted tools to improve the educational experience of nurses.
