Forming Collaborative Partnerships for Research Utilization and Evidence-Based Practice

Cathy J. Thompson, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, School of Nursing, Denver, CO, USA

Collaborative partnerships between academia and healthcare institutions are an effective and efficient means for creating a supportive research environment. In addition, collaborative partnerships open the door for sharing of scarce resources, conducting multisite research studies, and for disseminating research findings to a wider audience. Benefits of collaborative partnerships include a richer local atmosphere of research awareness and thus the enhancement of Nursing's individual and corporate identity as an empowered and scientifically based profession. Steps to develop collaborative relationships are presented. Suggestions for nontraditional partners will be offered. Strategies for involving faculty, students, staff, advanced practice nurses, and administrators are discussed.
