Creating a Supportive Environment for Research Utilization and Evidence-Based Practice
Learning Objective #1: Describe the benefits of collaborative partnerships to foster research utilization
Learning Objective #2: List two strategies to motivate staff and/or advanced practice nurses to practice from a research and evidence base
Research utilization is the heart of evidence-based practice. Multiple studies have shown that the organization is a strong influence to the support of research and evidence-based practice. Buy-in from a variety of providers is important to the overall goal of improving clinical practice and promoting positive patient outcomes. Strategies to create a supportive research culture may differ depending on the type of institutional setting. This symposium will present strategies to promote an organizational culture which supports research utilization and evidence-based practice from the perspectives of three different hospital settings: a university teaching hospital, a veteran's administration medical center, and a corporate hospital. Discussion of strategies directed at nurse scientists, nurse educators, advanced practice nurses, and bedside nurses will comprise the selected papers. This content is relevant to the global nursing community interested in promoting research- and evidence-based practice. Selected findings from a multisite research project promoting research utilization will be shared.
