Strategies for Success: Getting the Nursing Staff Excited about Research Utilization

Deborah Bonnes, BSN, RN, Clinical Nurse IV, Charge Nurse, IMCU, IMCU, University of Colorado Hospital, Denver, CO, USA

A supportive research environment, while vitally important, is only part of the answer towards successful implementation of research utilization and evidence-based practice. The attitude and perceptions of the nursing staff towards research and research utilization cannot be overlooked. The lack of time to read, investigate, and critique research findings is a common theme in multiple studies examining staff nurse attitudes towards research-based practice. A perceived lack of nursing authority to change practice is another common theme. Relying on administrative mandates of practice changes may work, but is counterproductive to the overall goal of improving clinical practice and promoting positive patient outcomes. This session will present methods for motivating and intimately involving the staff nurse in research utilization plans and projects.
