Evaluating the External Evidence: Critique and Synthesis

Kelly E. Lancaster, RN, BSN, Nursing, PACU/ASU, Brighton Campus, Nursing, PACU/ASU, Brighton Campus, Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME, USA

Prior to initiating any nursing research study in this facility, published research on the selected clinical issue is systematically critiqued using the Stetler model. The findings are synthesized in an integrated table and the level of evidence is determined. Based on the level of evidence and risk/benefit ratio, an evidence-based policy is initiated or a research study is generated. Staff nurses working in ambulatory surgery unit asked the question: “When can oral postoperative pain medications be started and not stimulate nausea and vomiting?” This presentation will demonstrate use of the Stetler model for critiquing the limited literature on this clinical topic, describe the integrated table of relevant findings, and discuss the direction of future practice in this area.
